Draft Economic Development Plan – 2023-2027

Have your say! We’re seeking your feedback for the Clare & Gilbert Valleys’ Economic Development Plan. The purpose of Economic Development Plan (EDP) is to provide clarity around the type of economic growth Council wants to achieve for the local community and identify specific opportunities for achieving this growth. Council has an existing Plan which is now out of date and we have created a new plan with updated information and actions for Council to achieve over the next 5 years.

Council is seeking your feedback via the Talk to Us website but we’ll also be doing drop in sessions at the following times and locations which you are welcome to attend:

  • Thursday, 3 August, 5-6pm at the Clare Town Hall, BJ Long Room
  • Wednesday, 9 August, 5-6pm at the Riverton Community Hall, Supper Room

The Clare Valley is more than Wine and Tourism. Those activities seem to get all of the Council's attention and all other businesses are ignored. Pretty much the same as when I went to school, in that if you were academicly gifted or good at sport you got all the attention. The other students were just used to make up numbers and provide funding for school projects.
Funnily enough, most of those people are not the people who have gone on to be very successful. There is a lot of talk every time one of these "Plans"are made up about consulting industry groups about this and that. I have been operating a business which at times has employed up to 16 people for the past 35 years and have never been approached by council or any other body about what my views are about business in the Clare Valley. All I hear is how we must support the wine and tourism sector.
If the Clare Valley can be more of a service sector destination rather than a tourist destination, then the people coming here will be coming back every few weeks or several times a year instead of tourists who come here every few years.
Kadina runs rings around Clare because it has the services. We go to Kadina to do vehicle registrations and get machinery parts. We go to Gawler for a CT Scan. While we are at these destinations, we do other shopping which helps their community. If we had more businesses that were regionally attractive, we would have many "repeat" visitors who would support our local community.
We basically need people who are in positions of power to create the environment in the Clare Valley to make it attractive to set up businesses in the area to make us the service destination - not just a tourist destination.
