Australia Day Celebrations
Consultation has concluded
Due to challenges and difficulties surrounding Australia Day Celebrations, early in its term Council considered how these difficulties might be addressed. It resolved:
That Australia Day celebrations within the Clare & Gilbert Valleys district remain the same until consultation can be undertaken with the wider community including the relevant peak bodies of Riverton, Saddleworth and Auburn.
We are now inviting community members to have their say about how Australia Day should be celebrated in the future and whether it should continue with the current format of three Council events being held across the district, or if a single, large event would be preferable.
If a single event is preferred then we invite you to share your thoughts on what this event might look like. Some things to consider include:
- Whether the event should move around the district each year, or be held in the town where the Citizen of the Year comes from (similar to Northern Areas Council).
- Whether the event should be a big family event, with lots of activities and entertainment that could become a cornerstone event in the annual district calendar, or a modest, low key celebration.

In terms of the specific question asked, I would see a single annual Australia Day event, hosting single Council-wide awards, as appropriate. It could be hosted each year in Clare, or every three years in Clare Riverton and Auburn.
I Think it should be held in the town/towns of the recipient/recipients with an event to include the families in the wider community
I would prefer council to continue its current AD celebrations on 26 January as there has been no other date indicated by the government.
The 3 towns events are fantastic and should at least be supported as an event that does bring people together to celebrate the day.
The awards are a separate issue. Most people are nominated/receive the award for volunteering, which is a significant contribution to a community.
With so many Local Government bodies debating the question as to whether Australia Day should in fact be celebrated on 26th Jan or at all, I think it is appalling that we are considering its format only and not its very existence. Not only an opportunity lost but an obvious demonstration of what Council thinks of the topic.

Hey, We have some fantastic previous 'Australia's of the Year' that have been continual doing outstanding volunteering work!!
I would love council to review them, and see if they qualify for higher awards???????
To my knowledge State & National Awards require Council Nomination. :-(
Be great to have a State or National Award recipient at a local Australia day brekky.

Share Australia day around the towns
I Prefer the three ward system, spreads out the Awards over the council Area. It also spreads the 'Promotion resource' of community involvement over the council Area. Helping all volunteer groups moral & recruitment.
Would rather see 'Council Funded' Australia day events held in the town(or even club room) of the award winner. The community that has been involved with the award winner are always keen it be involved with the celebration. The Recipient are happier to have their peer with them while they receive the award. And their peer are at the ceremony for the Recipient to publicly thank.
Having a yearly moving ceremony, will also encourage Town Committee to do their own 'self funded' event the following year.
